Description

Just 30 kilometres south-east of Marrakech, the Ourika Valley is a different world. Where the city is terracotta and noise, the valley is green, quiet and cool — the High Atlas rising on all sides, the Ourika river running clear along the valley floor.

Your driver picks you up at 9:00 and takes you through the Al Haouz plain before the road begins to climb and narrow into the mountains. The scenery changes quickly — olive groves and almond trees give way to terraced fields and traditional stone houses clinging to the hillside.

The first stop is a small argan oil cooperative, where local Berber women will show you the process of extracting oil from the fruit of the argan tree by hand. You will learn about the difference between culinary argan oil — used in Moroccan cooking — and cosmetic argan oil, now exported worldwide. There is no obligation to buy, though the quality is genuinely exceptional and the prices fair.

From there, you visit a traditional Berber house — a chance to understand how mountain families organise their homes, their food and their daily lives. If your trip falls on a Monday, you will also stop at the weekly village market, where locals gather to trade produce, livestock and goods in a scene that has changed little in generations.

The centrepiece of the day is Setti Fatma. After a walk through the village, you hike to the base of the waterfall — a refreshing, scenic trail suitable for most fitness levels. Bring walking shoes and, in summer, a hat.

Lunch is free time — your driver will suggest the best local spots along the river.
