Description

Two and a half hours north-east of Marrakech, the Ouzoud Waterfalls drop 110 metres through three tiers of red ochre rock into a turquoise basin surrounded by ancient olive groves. They are the highest waterfalls in Morocco — and one of the most spectacular natural sights in North Africa.

Your driver picks you up at 8:00 for the journey through the Middle Atlas foothills. The landscape changes gradually as Marrakech gives way to agricultural plains and then to forested hills — a pleasant and scenic drive with your professional bilingual guide available throughout.

On arrival at Ouzoud, the experience begins immediately. The sound of the falls reaches you before the sight does. Your local guide leads you down through the olive groves on a well-maintained trail that winds between viewpoints above, beside and below the cascades. Each angle is different, and each is worth the stop.

One of the great surprises of Ouzoud is its wildlife. Wild Barbary macaques — the same species found in Gibraltar — live freely in the trees around the falls and have grown accustomed to visitors. They are curious, close and entirely uncaged. For families with children, this is often the highlight of the day.

The boat trip is included in your booking. Your boatman rows you across the basin and towards the base of the falls, where the spray catches the light and the sound is overwhelming in the best possible way. It lasts around 15 minutes and the photographs are outstanding.

Lunch is free time — your guide will point you toward the best riverside restaurants, where fresh Berber tagine is cooked over charcoal and served with a view of the cascades that most people describe as the best meal of their trip.

Return to Marrakech by approximately 19:00. Air-conditioned vehicle, local guide, boat trip and hotel pickup all included.
