Description

Two and a half hours west of Marrakech, Essaouira sits where the Sahara meets the Atlantic — a city shaped by Portuguese fortifications, Berber traders, Jewish merchants and Gnawa musicians. UNESCO recognised its medina as a World Heritage Site in 2001, and it is easy to understand why.

Your driver collects you in the morning and takes the road west across the Haouz plain. On the way, you stop at an argan cooperative — a chance to see how this prized Moroccan oil is extracted and to sample both the culinary and cosmetic varieties.

On arrival in Essaouira, the rest of the day is yours to explore at your own pace, with your driver available for guidance and suggestions. Most visitors begin at the Skala de la Ville — the seafront ramparts lined with antique Portuguese cannons, where the wind comes off the Atlantic and the views are spectacular in any season.

From there, the medina rewards slow walking. The blue and white streets wind through the woodworkers' quarter — Essaouira is famous for its thuya wood craftsmanship — past the Jewish quarter of Derb Laalouj, through spice stalls and fabric markets, and out onto the lively Place Moulay El Hassan, where the cafés fill with Gnawa musicians playing the hypnotic rhythms that give the city its particular atmosphere.

Lunch is free — your driver can point you toward the best seafood grill on the harbour, where the morning's catch is cooked to order, or recommend quieter restaurants in the medina.

In the afternoon, the beach calls. Essaouira's long Atlantic shore is perfect for a walk in the sea wind, and consistently 5 to 10 degrees cooler than Marrakech in summer.
