Description

The road south of Marrakech is one of the great drives in Africa. Within an hour of leaving your hotel, the red city gives way to the rising ridges of the High Atlas — and from that moment, the day unfolds as a series of increasingly dramatic landscapes, history, and cinema.

Your driver collects you at 7:00 and heads straight for the mountains. The first stop is Toufliht, a quiet Berber village near Ait Ben Barka, where you can stretch your legs and hear about the day ahead. From here, the road climbs to Tizi N'Tichka — at 2,260 metres, the highest road pass in Morocco — where the views across the Atlas are genuinely breathtaking on a clear morning.

Descending southward, you enter the pre-Saharan landscape of the Drâa Valley region. The next stop is Ouarzazate, known across the film world as "the door of the desert." The international film studios here have hosted productions including Game of Thrones, Gladiator, The Mummy and Lawrence of Arabia. You will have time to visit and take photographs at your leisure.

The final stop is the centrepiece of the day: Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this extraordinary fortified village rises from the banks of the Ounila River like something from another century — because it essentially is. Your driver and guide will walk you through its history, its architecture, and the families who still live within its walls.
