Description

Casablanca is not what most people expect. There is no Rick's Café from the film (or rather, there is now — reconstructed for tourists), but there is something more interesting: the most dynamic, modern and architecturally rich city in Morocco, with a waterfront mosque that is one of the most extraordinary buildings on earth.

Your driver picks you up in the morning for the 2.5-hour journey north. Breakfast is included at a carefully selected restaurant along the route — a good opportunity to settle in before the day begins.

The undisputed centrepiece is the Hassan II Mosque. Completed in 1993 after six years of construction, it is the third-largest mosque in the world and the largest outside Saudi Arabia. Its minaret stands 210 metres high. Most remarkably, a section of the prayer hall floor is made of glass — so worshippers pray directly above the Atlantic Ocean. Your driver will give you time to walk around the exterior and take in the scale and detail of the architecture.

From there, the day moves into the city centre. Mohammed V Square is the heart of the Ville Nouvelle — surrounded by Art Deco buildings that reflect Casablanca's status as a major French colonial showpiece in the early 20th century. Nearby, the old Medina offers a quieter, more traditional contrast: narrow streets, local market stalls and a very different pace.

The Corniche is the city's seafront boulevard — ideal for a short walk and a coffee at one of the terrace cafés overlooking the Atlantic.

Lunch is free time — your driver will recommend restaurants across different budgets and cuisines.
